#39 Axis of Evil

Do you remember January 30, 2002 when President Bush said there was an axis of evil and the axis was Iraq, Iran, and North Korea? Why would he say such a thing? He must have been an idiot. Iraq was never a threat. They never had a dictator who used chemical weapons on his own people. They never had any weapons they weren't supposed to have by UN sanctions for 15 years. They never tortured their people for speaking up. Iran never had a dictator. North Korea never had a dictator. Neither of these two places are trying to get nuclear weapons. Neither of these two have threatened the outside world with destruction or the annihilation of any country, especially Israel. President Bush must have been a fool. Could there be anyone dumber?

Oh, wait! There may be a contender. Our current leader (tongue in cheek) says he wants Russia and China to punish North Korea for their launching of missiles and nuclear tests over the weekend. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/46129157.html. Since when will Russia and China ever punish anyone that are not citizens of their own country? For years, perhaps decades now, the UN has been trying to pass sanction after sanction, resolution after resolution, and action after action but there has been at least two countries that have tried to put a stop to these things every time: Russia and China. If President Obama thinks he can manipulate these two countries into punishing North Korea (like the way he manipulated our country to vote for him) then he must be even a bigger fool than President Bush. That question simply answers itself.

Results of poll: Should pirates be considered a terrorist and be declared war upon?
  • 83% said yes to both.
  • 8% said yes to being put on the list to watch but not declare war on them.
  • 8% said no to both.
  • 0% said no to being put on the list but declare war on them.
If you declare war on them what list should they be put on? Just a thought.

Yeah, because Russia and China jointly putting pressure on N. Korea is just crazy talk, right?

And no, pirates are not terrorists by simple definition alone.

Pirates are not trying to enact or incite political change through fear and violence, they just want your money.

I wish it wasn't crazy talk. I wish Russia and China would actually stand up to someone inthe international community besides against the US. It seems like the only ones they stand up against are those they claim as rebels and terrorists in their own country. My personal wish is of course we could settle this thing by not allowing North Korea to have a nuclear weapon. Unfortunately, I think that time has passed. And I think it is because we now have "change". ExPatMatt, how does the UK feel about all of this? I hear certainthings but can't get a first-person reference.

Good point on pirates. Should we handle them as a World Community or should each country just deal with them on their own?

Thanks for commenting.

Generally, in the UK, people view Bush#2 as a complete idiot who couldn't string two sentences together and lied to his people and the world in order to illegally invade Iraq in order to establish a permanent military presence in the region - for oil.

Well, Bush is stupid, so the plan and execution was down to Cheney/Rumsfeld.

That's the general feeling, I think. And I agree, to a certain extent.

It's funny how Saudi Arabia was never part of the axis, eh? Given their monetary involvement in 9/11 and their ongoing practices of torture and human rights abuses...

N. Korea is a tricky one. Kim Jong Ill is clearly a nutcase despot who will probably fire off some missile on hi death bed. However, due to the government's control over the media, most of the populous loves him and support him 100% So what can you do when a sovereign nation, backed by the population, wants to expand its military? Not a lot, really.

Iran. Well, look at Iran these days. It's crazy-town there. I think it's best to leave them to their own devices for a while and see how it turns out!

I will agree to some of your points:
1) Saudi Arabia is a problem. For some unknown (oil) reason we remain friends with them. But maybe you have to start somewhere (oil). I feel they should not be on our friend list but acquaintance. If it's all about human rights abuse, name one Middle Eastern country that has good human rights.
2)Kim Jong-il is crazy. He will shoot off rockets on his death bed. But we can't sit back and watch him do it. We need China and Russia to help back us up.
3) Iran is crazy right now. That may be because Iraq and Afghanistan (the two neighboring countries) are flirting with democracy and it scares their regime. But they have been crazy ever since I can remember. Leaving them to their own devices is okay as long as they stay within their boundaries. But this regime has stated flat out they will stay within their boundaries until Israel is blown off the map.

Thanks Matt. Take care.
